We seem to be experiencing a problem with the Headlines section. It looks like some of my headline links didn’t save. Not sure what happened there.

Just to clarify, there should be a link to an article in each Headline post.  I usually excerpt part of the article as well.  It looks like sometimes the links don’t save.  Which makes the Headlines part kind of useless.  So, I’ll work on a fix.

Just did my first WordPress upgrade.  It was… interesting.

There’s an automatic upgrade option, but mine failed.  So, I had to do it the manual way.

I think everything worked.  Let me know if you notice anything wonky.

Just noticed that basically none of the posts I’ve made recently had tags on them.

That’s user error on my part.

Turns out there’s an Add button that you need to click to apply the tags to your posts.  Oops.

I do not foresee correcting the errors of the last few weeks.

Since the fallout with Google, I’ve been furiously working on a replacement site for this one.

That’s been eating up the time that is usually reserved for researching fun facts. Hence the complete lack of content lately. (Though that doesn’t explain the lack of content from my co-bloggers… ahem…)

We’re close to a re-launch though, and I hope you’ll like it. There are a number of cool new features coming. But, alas, I’m not sure if the SOX clock will make the transition. Oh, well.

More soon.

I’m done with Google.

I was already annoyed on 9/11.

First they didn’t change their logo to commemorate the anniversary, again, then they notified me that “today is a day for service” and offered me links to help President Feckless carry out his shameful day of service crap.

That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

But then came the Google Updater that felt the need to install itself.

So now the camel’s pretty much dead.

So, it’s over. It will be a slow migration, but I’ve already added Bing to my shortcut bar, which is taking some getting used to.

Since I decided to get into the web hosting game, I’m planning to buy a domain name and move my email there. Any of you loyal readers who want web based email at my new domain are welcome.

And I’ll move the blog over to a new name/location at some point too. Hopefully I can take my content with me.

Now I need to find alternatives to the other Google stuff I use.

  • Google Reader – Looking for a decent RSS reader. Preferably web based.
  • iGoogle – Some type of aggregator/control panel like thing. Maybe I’ll build my own at my new domain. That could be cool.
  • Google Voice Chat – Yeah, there’s skype, but anything else out there I should be looking at?
  • Maps – The new version of maps on Bing looks pretty good. It should suffice.

So, I’m taking suggestions for product alternatives, new blog names, and an email domain. Ideas? Post in the comments, or shoot me a gmail. While I’m still there.

Unless we bust out a serious number of posts today, this July and last July will be our lowest blag posting months so far. At least even in these dry months, we’re still over an average of 1 a day to keep our “something new every day” name (mostly) accurate.

Well, as #4 commenter Ep0pEE mentioned the other day, this blog had its one year anniversary a few days ago.

So, I thought, what better way to celebrate than with some blog trivia!?!?!?!?!?!

Here Goes.

Since the blog was launched on June 3, 2008:

  • I have made $7.84 off of the Google Ads.
  • I have made $0.00 off of the Amazon links.

And a few of my favorite topics, for reference:

So, what’s next?

Well, obviously more trivia, commentary on Food, and some commentary on the news.

I’ve also decided to extend an invitation to all of the top commenters listed above to become regular posters. If that’s you, watch your e-mail for details!

I was going to title this entry “Tom is the harbinger of death” but since it’s our 1,000th post, I had to go with it instead! So, happy 1,000th post, interweb!

I say I’m the harbinger of death because at least 3 (and now 4) of these 1,000 posts were by me reporting on someone’s death.

On the list this time: David Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons. Unfortunately, it looks like he failed his saving throw vs. cancer.

He is preceded in death by other co-creator, [the more famous due to his appearance in an episode of Futurama] Gary Gygax. (He’s very… (rolls a series of dice)… HAPPY to meet you.)

According to this article;

An estimated 20 million people have played the game in which players create characters who embark on imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. Characters solve dilemmas, engage in battles and gather treasure and knowledge, and in the process earn points to become increasingly powerful over a series of sessions.

The creation of the game also led to the increased consumption of pizza, Doritos, and Mt. Dew.

Back in January I said I’d launch a new feature when I caught up with the backlog of old posts. Well, I’m done. So here goes.

I am going to write a series of posts inspired by the Billy Joel masterpiece We Didn’t Start the Fire. I’ll explain more in the next post, which will be the master post for the whole thing.

Aren’t you excited? I am!

It’s been awhile since I’ve given a stat update.

We’ve now passed 2,500 visits and 5,000 page views, with over 800 posts. Woo Hoo!!
