A bezoar is a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system (usually the stomach), though it can occur in other locations.

There are several varieties of bezoar, some of which have inorganic constituents and others organic.

Who knew people actually watched CSPAN?

Maine senator Olympia Snowe added her support to the current version of the health bill.

At the White House, Obama called the events “a critical milestone” toward remaking the nation’s health care system. He praised Snowe as well as Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the committee, and declared, “We are going to get this done.”

It’s disappointing for opponents of the bill, but not altogether unexpected since she’s spent some time discussing this with the pres already, and she’s only a part-time republican anyway.

UPDATE:
Charlie Gibson interviews, Snowe answers questions with blathering blatherskite, and this, which stood out to me:

Understandably people do have honest philosophical differences…

Yes, I’m glad you recognize that fact, Madam Senator. Both sides want citizens of the US to be healthier, and have different ideas of effective, long term strategy, but that observation does nothing to rationalize unifying toward a bad solution.

Apparently, it’s come to this:

As President Barack Obama campaigns to generate backing from voters for his health-care overhaul proposal, the first lady joined the effort today with a more focused pitch.

Michelle Obama said women are being “crushed by the current structure of our health care” because they often are responsible for taking care of family illnesses, arranging checkups and monitoring follow-up care.

I guess I missed the “Personal Concierge” provision of the proposed law.

And, could we get some facts to back up this assertion, please?

Women also are more disproportionately affected by the lack of insurance options because they are more likely to work part-time or at small businesses that don’t provide coverage.

I wasn’t aware that small businesses and part-time jobs were strictly the domain of women, but if I read it on the internet, it has to be true.

This smacks of desperation to me. It actually reminds me of the old 80’s trick where they added a new baby to the show when ratings were flagging.

I’m sure there’s a more apt comparison than that, but it’s Friday, and that’s all I got now.

He’s missing a finger, however.

Despite Cavuto’s best attempts to get any reaction from the guy, he holds steady. It’s almost too unbelievable to believe.

Finger bitten off during California health protest

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – California authorities say a clash between opponents and supporters of health care reform ended with one man biting off another man’s finger.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Frank O’Hanlon says about 100 people demonstrating in favor of health care reforms rallied Wednesday night on a street corner. One protester walked across the street to confront about 25 counter-demonstrators.

O’Hanlon says the man got into an argument and fist fight, during which he bit off the left pinky of a 65-year-old man who opposed health care reform.

A hospital spokeswoman says the man lost half the finger, but doctors reattached it and he was sent home the same night.

She says he had Medicare.

O’Hanlon says the attacker fled but authorities have a good description.

Dude.

To be clear, it was the ObamaCare supporter that did the biting.

I never knew.

Native Americans have received federally funded health care for decades. A series of treaties, court cases and acts passed by Congress requires that the government provide low-cost and, in many cases, free care to American Indians. The Indian Health Service (IHS) is charged with delivering that care.

So, how’s that working out for them. Not so good, actually.

Unfortunately, Indians are not getting healthier under the federal system. In 2007, rates of infant mortality among Native Americans across the country were 1.4 times higher than non-Hispanic whites and rates of heart disease were 1.2 times higher. HIV/AIDS rates were 30% higher, and rates of liver cancer and inflammatory bowel disease were two times higher. Diabetes-related death rates were four times higher. On average, life expectancy is four years shorter for Native Americans than the population as a whole.

Hmmmm. I think all we need to do is scale it up. The bureaucracy is just not quite big enough. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

I attended a healthcare “Tele” Town Hall with my congressman today, and I have to give it a big “F”.

The technology is actually rather cool. You pre-register for the event, and then they call you when it starts. Because they know your name and phone number, all you had to do to ask a question was press “0″ to join the queue. The congressman then called on people- “Mary from Scottsdale, you’re next”…

(I should note that my congressman did actually call me, unlike most of those that registered for the Senator Penguins are Drowning event.)

Despite the neat technical aspect, the forum was a miserable failure. First off, the congressman read prepared remarks from a script- something that would not be tolerated in a real town hall. Next, you couldn’t gauge the crowd’s reaction, so that live element was missing. There was no booing or applause.

All that led to a situation where the congressman could easily filibuster. The performance reminded me of a bad radio talk show. He took questions, and then moved on to the next without giving the questioner the opportunity for a follow-up.

It’s pretty easy to control the message when you have complete control over the forum. I’ll be sending a follow-up to the congressman tomorrow to request a real meeting- one complete with booing and angry people.

Hiding behind the phone is a completely unacceptable and cowardly way of communicating with your constituents.

Health Care Fun Fact #4,235: The proposed health care legislation sets aside funds for the really important things. You know, like bike paths and street beautification, whatever the hell that means.

Under the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee’s “Affordable Health Choices Act,” local governments can apply for “community transformation” grants to build jungle gyms, sidewalks, bicycle paths, and grocery stores, to install streetlights, and to establish new farmers’ markets.

Cities can also apply for “community makeover” grants, which can provide them with up to $10 per resident in taxpayer dollars for “beautifying streets.”
