So I asked: since guns are readily available in Chicago even with a ban in place, do you really think it’s been effective?
I’m hardly the only guy who asks the mayor things he doesn’t want to answer, and I’ve been responsible for at least one of his huffing, puffing, ranting tangents, which generally get the press corps laughing, thus enabling him to move on to the next question without giving a real answer to the one at hand.
But even by those standards, this was a masterful and surreal performance.
“Oh!” Daley said. “It’s been very effective!”
He grabbed a rifle, held it up, and looked right at me. He was chuckling but there was no smile.

It’s interesting how vicious, weird, enraged the anti-violent can get.
Almost as odd as how condemning the anti-judgmental often become.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think violence should be favored or celebrated, but I do think that violence as a tool wielded by discerning, lawful citizens is the best possible defense against much much worse violence (eg).
I additionally don’t condone judgmental attitudes, and yet I do believe it’s the right thing to do when one has the correct intent. I believe in judging out of a love for truth and a heart to protect others from error, but certainly not a will to raise oneself above others as being more correct, and certainly not to condemn others. Honestly though, I do struggle with this particular vice. I think for some, the allure of being more correct is nearly irresistible.
