There is a movie version of the Japanese cartoon Astroboy coming out. I know of the series, but was curious, so I read up on it.
Turns out Astroboy is basically considered the godfather of anime. The manga (think: comic version) was serialized from 1951 to 1968 and
was animated starting in 1963. This animated series was the first to use the traditional “anime” aesthetics.
The plot is that Dr. Tenma creates Astroboy in the image of his son who dies in a car accident. He later sells Astroboy to a circus when
he realized that Astro won’t grow or behave like his son. This all seems pretty dark for a 1960’s cartoon to me! Later, another
scientist, Professor Ochanomizu, finds Astro and adopts him. Crazy anime fights ensue.
From the previews, it looks like they are taking some liberties with the new version. For example, Nick Cage is doing the voice of Tenma,
which makes me think he won’t be selling Astro to the circus this time. But I could be wrong.
Anyway, I think this one will wait for Netflix, so I won’t be able to review the movie for a few months.

I didn’t realize he sold him! I do still stick with my – looks like Pinochio statement though; I think they still can relate in some ways. However-we will for sure Netflix it-because it does seem interesting.
